When do I need to be evaluated by an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. An orthodontist can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and incoming teeth. Dr. Collazo's ability to diagnosis and treat these problems early can help guide facial growth and tooth eruption, thus preventing more serious problems from developing.
My child's dentist wants to put braces on his/her teeth. Is he/she an orthodontist?
When looking for orthodontic treatment, it is very important to seek out a qualified specialist. Orthodontic specialists must complete an advanced specialty education program. Only six percent of dentists are orthodontists, since admission to orthodontic programs is extremely competitive and selective. General dentists and pediatric dentists are legally able to provide orthodontic care with braces. However, only dentists who have completed this accredited program may call themselves orthodontists. To avoid compromising your orthodontic treatment it is best to seek out a member in good standing of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).
Why do I need braces? My teeth look Straight.
Everyone wants a beautiful smile - that's one of the most obvious reasons to seek orthodontic treatment. In general, people believe orthodontics is a cosmetic procedure to straighten crooked teeth or close spaces. However, it is just as important to establish a proper bite relationship. In reality, when orthodontic problems are left untreated, they can severely jeopardize the health of gums, bone and jaw joints. Crowding may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss. Bad bites can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty in chewing and/or speaking, excess stress on supporting bone and gum tissue, and possible jaw joint problems. These problems can lead to chronic headaches and face or neck pain. Dr. Collazo is pleased to be able to offer his many years of training, his experience and skill to diagnose and correct irregularities of the bite, jaws (facial orthopedics) and temporomandibular joints. Your teeth can last a lifetime if they're properly aligned and well cared for.
What kind of braces will I wear? Will I need to make changes to my lifestyle?
With the latest techniques and superior materials, we have braces to fit any lifestyle! A majority of our children and adolescent patients wear the metal brackets which are much smaller and more comfortable than they used to be. We also offer clear (non-staining) or ceramic brackets which are less noticeable. Invisalign "aligners" are a perfect choice to straighten your teeth without anyone knowing (certain restrictions apply) and lingual braces (ones that go behind your teeth) may be appropriate in some cases. You can do almost anything with braces - sing, play a musical instrument, dine out and even have your picture taken. Dr. Collazo provides custom-made braces, retainers or other corrective appliances based on your needs and your lifestyle.
Can Adults wear braces?
Yes, it's never too late to get a healthy, beautiful smile. Orthodontic treatment can be successful at almost any age. A vast majority of people relate wearing braces to young people. They have been educated to believe that orthodontic problems are for children and adolescents only. However, adults are living longer and want to make the investment in their overall dental and medical health. Adult orthodontics can improve tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss. It can prevent abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty in chewing and misalignment of jaw joints. Dr. Collazo has the expertise to not only correct irregularities of the bite, but also to correct irregularities of the jaws (facial orthopedics) and temporomandibular joints. Orthodontic treatment with Dr. Collazo is always a change for the better, regardless of your age!
How do braces work and does it hurt?
Dr. Collazo provides custom-made braces, retainers or other corrective appliances, according to the problem being treated. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth and jaws into their proper positions.
Our goal is to make your orthodontic treatment a positive and uniquely important experience. We take pride in knowing that we provide our patients with the highest level of care possible. After the initial placement of braces, you may notice a slight discomfort, however, you may resume your normal activity immediately after the braces are applied.
How will I know how to take care of my braces and what can't I eat?
To achieve the desired results of your recommended treatment, you must diligently follow Dr. Collazo's instructions about wearing orthodontic appliances and practice good dental hygiene. You will be instructed to brush and floss regularly, avoid hard and sticky foods, wear your rubber bands and/or appliances and keep all scheduled appointments. You will be provided with a list of DO NOT EAT FOODS and specific instructions on how to care for your braces. Achieving a healthy, beautiful smile is a team effort at Dr. Collazo's office.
I have a flexible spending account. Will you file for this?
Many employers have made this wonderful tax saving opportunity available to their employees. It may also be utilized for orthodontic treatment. Pretaxed dollars are set aside in a specialized account as designated by the employee. The employee in turn must use the monies out of this account for medical or dental needs. This is a special account established by the employer and we will be happy to provide any necessary receipts for the employee to be reimbursed.
How is my fee determined and how long does treatment take?
The cost of treatment depends on the severity of the patient's bite (malocclusion) as well as the length of treatment. Treatment time typically ranges from one to three years depending on the age, the severity of the case and the patient's cooperation. No two smiles are alike, and no two treatment plans are either. Some active treatment may only take a few months, while others can take up to 30 months. We pride ourselves in taking the time necessary to explain your procedures each step of the way.

We offer a variety of convenient payment plans including a "no down" payment plan and "interest free" financing plan. In addition, many dental insurance plans now include orthodontic benefits.
